Plus, the protagonists are very likeable. And yeah, it's hard, but it's worth it if you're looking for a CHALLEEEENGE!!. Brick Breaker with items, enemies, and bosses. Like their other games this game takes some skill to complete but it is extremely fun.. NOTE: As of writing this review, I have not played this game in co-op mode.*Strikey Sisters is a fantastic foray into the Breakout genre for DYA Games. Expect the basic breakout formula, only with the inclusion of various monsters that roam the level and attack your character or impede the ball in some way. A set number of them are able to spawn at once, and if you kill some by hitting them with the ball or your weapon, they will soon be replaced by new ones. The only way to stop them from respawning is by breaking all the blocks in the level, thus allowing you to defeat all the monsters and win the level. Powerups are dropped by defeated monsters, some that are used immediately and some that can be triggered at the player's command. Most of them feel like solid, useful abilities and are worth collecting.Each broken block drops a coin that falls toward the player like a powerup and can be collected or missed. Coins are essentially your "score" for the level- the total percentage collected is displayed onscreen as you play. When you reach certain percentages, chests will spawn in the level, containing one-time collectables: A powerup that allows you to capture a monster for your bestiary, a green gem that counts toward hundred-percenting the game, and sometimes a key whose function I admittedly can't identify. Unless you're very careful, you probably won't collect all of the coins, but it's not necessary to do so in order to get all the extras in the level.There are boss levels that work the same way, but there's a big monster with a health bar that ends the level as soon as it is defeated. Breaking all the blocks isn't necessary in this case(which can be irksome if you're trying to get all the coins).The minute-to-minute gameplay is fun and addicting, with the ball being fun and easy to control and the level design tight and manageable. The music is upbeat and fun, and the overall difficulty is challenging in places while being forgiving where it matters. The retro pixel art is well-implemented and pleasing.As for negatives, they are few but somewhat persistent. There is a story, but it's kind of dumb and inconsequential. There are cutscenes before each boss fight, and for the most part, they are EXCRUCIATING. The writing is quite poor and what is probably supposed to be comedy falls flat, especially when combined with the abysmal voice work. The main characters' VAs needed WAY better direction, or maybe a complete recast. (There are voice clips in the levels as well, but they are generally more tolerable, aside from when the bosses repeat their 2 attack lines ad nauseam.) To be completely fair, the voices can be turned off and the cutscenes skipped. I'd much rather experience good content than have to skip bad content, though.The only other complaint I have is that the game feels somewhat shallow. Yes, it's nailed down a really fun gameplay formula, and has a whole lot of levels, but there isn't really a depth to the content. There's only one kind of block to break, and no matter how many ways you arrange them, it starts to feel a little samey after a while. Changing up the environment and monsters helps a little, but... you never unlock new powerups or weapons, the level extras are the same every time and don't do anything for you except completion percentage, that kind of thing. An easy way to add a bit of reward to the extras would be to make you do a little more damage to given monsters after you add them to your bestiary.Granted, there's something to be said for simplicity and consistency, but I would sincerely like to see a follow-up to this game with a little more depth to it.Overall, Strikey Sisters is absolutely worth its price and worth picking up if you are a breakout fan or just want to play a simple arcade game from time to time. I imagine I will keep it installed for quite a while, and look forward to future titles from this develpoer.. Straightforward action with an upgrade to brick breaker like games. Fun, challenging and simple, with charismatic characters and simple but well worked mechanics, Strikey Sisters is a welcome surprise that you must have in your library.. Created by DYA Games Strikey Sisters mixes up the traditional Block Breaker/Breakout gameplay with the addition of fantasy themed monsters and powerups.The Strikey Sisters beloved pet has gone missing and is suspected of been kidnapped by one of the local monster lords, its up to the duo to aggressively question the local monster population while searching for their pet. The gameplay focuses on classic brick breaking arcade action while assualting the player with a ever spawning horde of monsters each with its own method to either attack or obstruct the player. These levels are broken up into areas each with its own boss which can be tackled in any order allowing a player to move on and take a break if a level proves to be particularly frustrating though the option of 3 difficulty levels allows the game to be accessable to players both young and old. In addition there are several collectables to obtain throughout the game such as a bestiary, secret levels to discover cutscenes to unlock and a bonus 50 levels once the main game is complete.Pros:Nice visual art style and clear hud with lots of little details in the sprite work.Visually attractive and clear in design for menus and most mechanics are explained adaptly.Unique gameplay, suitable for younger audience. Choice between difficulty settings and level progression meaning failure doesn't result in a restart.60 bonu levelsSteam achievements Cons:Gameplay can be frustrating at times due to typical Breakout game issues.Grows repetitive. Very fun breakout style game, but with power-ups and a variety of enemies/bosses to make it more interesting. This game could've easily been released during the SNES era, mainly because of the graphics and the BGM. I can see people having two main problems with this game - the first being that it can be beaten in less than 10 hours and the second that the voice acting can come off as cheesy. Overall, it's a fun game from a developer/publisher I'm quickly becoming a fan of.
